Legal education webinars

CLEONet is partnering with community organizations to deliver workshops about legal issues online. These webinars, like everything you see on CLEONet, are aimed at community workers and advocates who work with low-income and disadvantaged communities. No legal background is required.

These legal education webinars are easy to take part in. Participants only need a telephone and a computer with an Internet connection. They are delivered through a telephone conference call integrated with a web meeting that lets participants hear the presentation, look at PowerPoint slides, browse web sites together, and ask questions using live chat. We also record these webinars so that they can be accessed on CLEONet on an ongoing basis. To watch and listen to our archived webinars visit Legal education webinar archive.

Upcoming Webinars

Hot Topics in Consumer Protection: Motor Vehicle Repairs

March 22, 2010 12:00 p.m. - Space is limited - Register now

This webinar, presented by Margaret Capes, Legal Education Coordinator of Community Law School (Sarnia-Lambton) Inc., focuses on the bane of many an automobile owner: motor vehicle repairs. While there are many reputable repair facilities, not all repair shops adhere to the consumer disclosures and protections mandated by the Ontario Consumer Protection Act, 2002. We look at issues such as repair estimates, rate disclosures, warranties, and invoicing for repairs. We review consumer remedies and dos-and-don'ts when faced with an unsatisfactory repair job or unexpected repair bill. Finally, we learn about the important protections that the Act contains for consumers with regard to motor vehicle repairs and how to exercise those rights.

Hot Topics in Consumer Protection: Pre-Paid Services

April 12, 2010 12:00 p.m. - Space is limited - Register now

This webinar, presented by Margaret Capes, Legal Education Coordinator of Community Law School (Sarnia-Lambton) Inc., looks at the sometimes shadowy world of prepaid services. Fitness club memberships, dance lessons, and tae kwon do classes are all examples of prepaid personal development service agreements covered under the Consumer Protection Act, 2002. Many consumer goods and services require prepayment, and most businesses are honest. However, consumers can find they have a problem when they have prepaid and the business fails to provide the service they expected, or doesn't provide any service at all. There are certain dangers for consumers that are common to the prepaid membership industry, and the Act provides some protections for consumers whose prepaid agreements go awry. We look at issues such as cooling-off periods, prepayment of fees, renewals, and warranties. Finally, we learn about the important protections that the Act contains for consumers with regard to prepaid service agreements and how to exercise those rights.

Hot Topics in Consumer Protection: Cell Phone Contracts

May 17, 2010 12:00 p.m. - Space is limited - Register now

This webinar, presented by Margaret Capes, Legal Education Coordinator of Community Law School (Sarnia-Lambton) Inc., looks at the one of the most common purchases of our modern world: cell phone contracts. The use of cell phones has risen dramatically over the past decade, and with it, the number of service providers. To retain clients, service providers typically offer incentives for consumers in exchange for a fixed-term contract. Consumers are usually presented with a standard-form contract with little opportunity to review, let alone negotiate, the contract terms. As a result, many consumers find themselves locked into a contract for anywhere from one to three years, with substantial penalties in the form of cancellation fees and other charges for changing or cancelling their service before the end of the contract.  We look at the various pieces of legislation and agencies that govern the cell phone industry. We also look at the rights and remedies available to consumers who find their service contract untenable, as well as how and where to effectively complain about an unresponsive service provider.
