Legal representation for human rights complainants may be missing in revamped system

Colleen Pritchard says five years of sexual harassment by a co-worker left her "an emotional wreck."

But that was just the beginning for the former Sudbury electronics technician, who spent another seven years trying to get the Ontario Human Rights Commission to take her complaint to a tribunal.

"It was a nightmare," said Pritchard, who eventually settled her case with no admission of liability by her former employer.

Experiences like hers prompted the Ontario government to take an axe to the human rights system last fall with Bill 107, abolishing the screening process and sending complainants straight to a tribunal.
